🌼 How to Grow California Poppy

1. Choose the Right Location

Pick a spot that gets full sun (at least 6 hours daily). California poppies thrive in dry, poor, or sandy soils—perfect for low-maintenance areas or wildflower gardens.

2. Prepare the Soil

Loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil. Remove weeds and debris. Do not add compost or fertilizer—these flowers do better in lean soil.

3. Sow the Seeds

  • Scatter seeds directly on the soil surface.

  • Lightly press them down to make contact with the soil.

  • Do not cover with soil—they need sunlight to germinate.

4. Water Gently

Use a fine mist to water the area lightly. Keep the soil moist (not soaked) until germination. After sprouting, water less frequently—only during dry periods.

5. Germination

Seeds typically sprout within 7–14 days. Be patient—cool temperatures may delay sprouting slightly.

6. Thin the Seedlings

Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them to 6–10 inches apart. This gives each plant space to grow and promotes better air circulation.

7. Let Them Bloom

California poppies begin blooming in spring and may continue into early summer. In mild climates, you may get a second bloom in fall.

8. Deadhead (Optional)

To encourage more blooms, remove spent flowers regularly. You can also leave them to self-seed for next year.
